The Electricity Supply Companies, also called ESCOMs, are liable for electrical power distribution in the state of Karnataka. Its origin was in Karnataka Electricity Board. This distribution unit was incorporated to supply efficient & reliable electrical power supply to the people of Karnataka state.

Karnataka’s electricity department is broadly classified into the subsequent three major groups:

1.Generation: Karnataka Power Corporation Limited

In 1999, Karnataka began a serious reform of the facility sector. As the predominant step, the Karnataka Electricity Board (KEB) was disintegrated and in its place, the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL) was incorporated.

This was followed by the constitution of the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) in November 1999.

The transmission & distribution business governed by KPTCL were decoupled in June 2002. The distribution companies were set up to administer power in Karnataka.

4.HESCOM (Hubli Electricity Supply Company Limited):

It has been invested with the distribution of power to the districts of Gadag, Vijayapura, Bagalkote, Uttara Kannada, Haveri, Belagavi.

5.MESCOM (Mangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited):

It has been invested with the distribution of power to the districts of Shivamogga, Chickmagalur, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi.
