Malla Reddy Engineering College was established in the year 2002. It is an independent institute and a part of the Malla Reddy Group of Institutions which was established by Sri. Ch. Malla Reddy. The college is a subsidiary of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad. The college is recognised by University Grants Commission (UGC) and accredited by the NBA and National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with a grade of 'A'. MREC was given autonomous status by JNTUH in 2011 and by UGC in 2014 for a time of 6 years.

Malla Reddy Engineering College has nine departments some of which are the Department of Humanities and Sciences, Department of Information Technology, Department of Mining, Department of Mechanical Engineering and so on. The MREC courses are offered in undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the field of architecture and engineering, computer application and IT, management and business organisation and sciences. The admission is carried out every year by the dedicated MREC admission cell. The candidates have to appear in the TS EAMCET exam for B.Tech, TS-PGECET exam for M.Tech and TS-ICET exam for MBA admissions.

Candidates who are seeking admission at Malla Reddy College of Engineering need to enrol themselves at the official website of the entrance tests such as TS EAMCET for B.Tech, GATE, TS PGECET for M.Tech and TS-ICET/CAT/MAT for MBA courses. The candidates have to pass these entrance exams in order to become eligible to apply for their chosen course at MREC. The MREC scholarships are available only to the meritorious students of the college mainly. Almost 60% of the students also secure scholarships from the Telangana Government.
