About the Institute
Sir J J Institute of Applied Art started operations in the premises of Sir J. J. School of Art in 1935 and was awarded independent institute status in 1961.
Since 1981 this institute has been affiliated to the University of Mumbai, A B.F.A. (Applied Art), degree Course as prescribed by the University of Mumbai. All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi has given approval for B.F.A. in Applied Art, Degree Course at this Institute. In the year 1988-89 started the post graduation course M. F. A. (Applied Art) by University of Mumbai.
As per the norms of All India Council for Technical Education, University of Mumbai has revised the course pattern to 12+4 years, from the academic year 1998-99. This has been done to maintain course uniformity across the country, also considering the required academic experience of a candidate.
The aim of the institute is to provide facilities, for the professional and specialized training in Visual Communication. The specialized areas covered are Lettering-Typography, Illustration, Photography, Computer Graphics and the Exhibition Design & Stage Craft. The Course is designed for the large number of talented youth.
The Institute believes in changing and adopting with time, thus providing relevant and contemporary education. For the last 79 years our alumni have set the standard by which, creative practitioners in advertising, public relation and the media judge themselves.
The alumni of this Institute are well placed in the professional field of Communication Design, such as Advertising Agencies, Design Departments of various corporate organizations, Animation Studios, Publishing Houses, etc. Every year the jobs for skilled artists and designers keep on increasing, which in turn increase the responsibilities of the Institute to produce quality talent.
Sir J. J. Institute of Applied Art Courses The Institute conducts the following courses.
The First Year of the Degree Course B.F.A. (Applied Art) is designed to assist students in developing the proficiency and motivation to sustain a high level of achievement through the individual work. Strong emphasis is placed upon the “Learning by Doing” and students are expected to challenge their abilities and extend their experience by addressing problems and broadening the range of their working methods. In this year students are introduced to the fundamentals of Applied Art. Specialization program starts from the Second year onwards, where the students are also introduced to the elective subjects: a) Lettering and Typography, b) Illustration, c) Photography, d) Computer Graphics, e) Exhibition, Design and Display & Stage Craft Third year students have to select any one elective of their choice which they have to study till the Final Year alongwith the Communication Design. The intake capacity is of 20 students per elective subject. The students have also to prepare a Dissertation or Project Report on their elective subjects. Drawing is regarded as a continuously valuable discipline and source of idea, provision is made for it at all stages of the present course

Sir J. J. Institute of Applied Art Facilities i) Institute is situated strategically in the heart of Mumbai City, in a picturesque surrounding. Built up area: 6,000 sq. feet Carpet area: 40,000 sq. feet. ii) Well-illuminated and ventilated, classrooms with ample moving space for the students. iii) Well-equipped illustration studio where 150 students can sit comfortably and work. iv) Well-equipped Photography studio and a shooting studio with ample instruments v) A Print-shop with 4 printing machines and a complete infra-structure of Silk Screen Printing Studio. vi) One workshops with hand tools and various equipments for students to experiment. vii) A multi-purpose Assembly Hall with built in platform for studnets’ Activities. viii) A Display room for occasional academic displays and to exhibit students’ work to show their progress. ix) A Computer Terminal Room. x) A Room for Spray Painting. xi) A Video and Audio-Visual Room. xii) The institute’s library has more than 8000 books and many periodicals in collection. A well illuminated ample space for readers with a photo-copying facility. xiii) A well managed Hostel for 120 students. xiv) The institute has a Gymnasium, a Gymkhana and a Playground. xv) Separate common rooms for boys and girls students. xvi) Canteen. |
