Stella Maris College is a public institution which was established in the year 1947. The Franciscan Missionaries established it. It is a catholic women's college with a minority status. Stella Maris College was founded in Santhome, Mylapore, on August 15th, 1947, in a modest one-story building with a group of students. The college was moved to its current site, The Cloisters, on Cathedral Road in Chennai later in 1960. An independent college connected to the University of Madras is Stella Maris College.

Stella Maris College is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with an "A" grade (NAAC).
