The University of Newcastle began as a college of the University of New South Wales. It opened in late 1951 and accepted its first students in 1952. The University of Newcastle was granted autonomy by the NSW parliament in 1964. It became an independent university in 1965.
The university is known to operate multiple campuses, namely Callaghan or New Castle Campus, Central Coast Campus, Port Macquarie Campus, Singapore Campus, Newcastle City campus, and Sydney Campus. The Callaghan Campus is the main campus of the university. The campus is a wonderful mix of award-winning, architecturally designed buildings, and world-class infrastructure scattered over 140 hectares of natural bushland. This campus has a student administration block, program planning block, and teaching & learning, division. All major faculties of the university are located within this campus. It features sporting fields, aquatic centers, and four residential houses, namely Edwards Hall, International House, Barahineban Hall, and Evatt House.
Also, the campus is home to two main libraries, namely Auchmuty Library and the Huxley Library. Both libraries consist of thousands of books, journals, e-books, magazines, and research documents. The Central Coast Campus houses four faculties, namely the Faculty of Health, the Faculty of Business & Law, the Faculty of Education & Arts, and the Faculty of Science. The other campuses are home to some centers and science departments along with well-equipped laboratories. The University has nearly 37,946 students, including more than 7,399 international students from 113 countries.
The university offers a postgraduate program and undergraduate program. The academic structure of the university has several subjects that are categorized into five main faculties, namely the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Education & Arts, the Faculty of Business & Law, the Faculty of Engineering & Built Environment and the Faculty of Health & Medicine. Moreover, the university provides great internship opportunities for the students. Students also have a scope to work outside of Australia.
